Why water heater on and off?
If your gas water heater keeps turning off, the problem most likely lies with the thermocouple. This vital component detects when the pilot light is lit and then allows gas to flow to the burner. A faulty thermocouple will shut off gas to the burner as well as the pilot.
Can you hear the Rinnai Water Heater turn off?
With the hot water at the kitchen sink and/or the shower turned on – if I am standing in front of my Rinnai water heater, I can see the water heater turn off and the In Use light go out. Meanwhile I can still hear water running through the water heater.
Is there an error code on my Rinnai tankless?
No code. Tried flushing the unit but that didn’t help. Unit makes a loud rumble (very loud) when it kicks on. This was the only issue for maybe a week or so. Today it started kicking on/off while calling for hot water.

It was installed in my house back in 2009. It has been working flawlessly up until about 2 weeks ago. Then all of a sudden while trying to run hot water in either of the showers or in the kitchen sink, the hot water would start cycling between cold and hot. This cycling happens randomly and for various amounts of time.

What should I do if my Rinnai controller is not working?
If a controller is fitted check that it is on also) Check gas supply (Turn gas stove top on then turn hot water tap on. If flame drops on stove this shows it is possibly a gas supply issue) Is there enough water flowing? (Try opening tap further or turn another tap on as well) Are there any error codes displayed on controllers?
