Why is my header tank overflowing?
There are many reasons why the header tank is overflowing: Issues with pump over run. Faulty coil in the hot water tank. Ball valve needs repairing or replacing.
Why is my header tank overflowing with warm water?
Ball Valve in the feed and expansion tank is working correctly. It’s not leaking cold water into the tank. Is it possible that the mains cold water fed into the system is forcing its way through a split coil in the hot water cylinder causing this to completely fill and force water back up into the feed and expansion tank?
Why is there a hole in the top of a header tank?
The overflow pipe is there to prevent a water container from overflowing. The hole towards the top of sinks is there to prevent water overflowing onto the floor and header tanks have a pipe that works in the same way.
Where does the overflow from the central heating tank go?
The central heating feed and expansion tank overflow pipe runs from the small water tank in your loft to the outside of your house. It will be made of either plastic, copper or lead and usually leads out through the eaves and soffits. The tank supplies your heating system and allows water to expand safely within the system when it’s heated.
What causes a small cold water tank to overflow?
Alternatively, a failed immersion thermostat could cause water to boil in the tank. The tank is normally fed by the same cold water pipe as the larger tank. This small tank also has a ball cock which can suffer from the same problems as the main cold water tank.
Why is my loft header tank overflowing?
So I can confirm that it is not the Ball valve. The tank in the loft continues to fill up over a number of days and overflows via the overflow pipe outside. We have not had our central heating on or the emersion heater and still it is filling up.

Why does the hot water go up to the header tank?
This can mean that the pump is attempting to do this when the valves are closed and the only place for the hot water to go is up to the header tank. To avoid this, heating systems should have an Automatic Bypass Valve (ABV) which allows the hot water to circulate even when the valves are closed.
What causes a feed and expansion tank to overflow?
This rise in water levels can then lead to the feed and expansion tank overflowing. You’ll also be able to tell if the coil in the cylinder has perforated because the water from the taps will have a yellow or brown colour which is from the liquid for the central heating system.
