Why is my boiler not switching off?

How do you unstick a boiler valve?
After you remove the lid of the boiler, you have to locate the diverter valve mechanism. Run tap water on hot and observe the diverter valve. If you run hot water, the valve is supposed to close in order to divert it to the tap, meaning it should move. If you see no movement, then it’s stuck.
Why is my mid position valve buggered?
Most valves use the Synchron motor (although not all) which is easy to buy and fit from a Plumbers Merchant. Alternatively it may be a really s tty system which is not allowing the ball inside the valve to close, but that’s a bit unlikely.
Can a manual override valve work if the servo has failed?
Given that the manual override worked, I’d suspect the valve itself is OK and it’s just the servo that has failed. That’s relatively cheap and easy to replace, it’s a practical DIY job if you’re comfortable dealing with mains voltage wiring and doesn’t involve getting wet.

If you have the actuator off then it will pass down both because there’s nothing actually holding it in the position no matter where you place it. The spring holds the valve tightly shut on hot water and the motor keeps it under tension for the central heating position. I’m leaving this information on a thread where someone may find it useful.
