Why does my water pump keep surging?
The air pressure inside a tank is regulated by an internal air bladder and an external electrical pressure switch. If either of these is worn out or not working, this can cause a pulsating water flow due to water surging in the pipes.
What causes a well to surge?
Over time, the air in a simple well tank will be absorbed by the water. As the amount of air in the tank decreases, the tank looses its ability to hold pressure, and the well pump on-off cycle time decreases until the pump cycle causes surging at the faucets.

Setting the sprinkler system to operate in smaller sections, rather than watering the entire lawn at once, may be your best solution. Turning off the pump and draining your water tank may reduce water surges. When the water supply is a well, the source of the problem may be a waterlogged tank or well bladder.
