Where is the stem on a Moen faucet cartridge?
Inside the body of the cartridge, there is a stem that moves up and down for shut-off/flow volume, and rotates for hot/cold mix. Pulling up on the stem is supposed to pull out the cartridge.

I had previously purchased a different Moen Posi-Temp Cartridge Repair Kit, Moen part # 98040, which had the white plastic (useless) cartridge remover. It obviously won’t work if the cartridge stem has broken off. We were not quite ready to destroy the white vertical plastic visible fron of the old cartridge yet.

The broken cartridge is not easy to get out and Moen makes a Moen Cartridge Puller that you can use to pull the valve out. However, the valve puller screws into the shaft of the valve stem, which in our case broke off (pic below).
