When it comes to a broken water heater element, a plumber may be able to replace it. With a new element, the heater’s back in business, and you’re back to enjoying warm, steamy showers. So, if your water heater isn’t producing hot water, how can you tell if it’s the electric element that’s to blame?

Heating elements can burn out. Sometimes one element fails causing the other element to work overtime. A burnt-out element is a common cause of water heater woes. The thermostat might quit working along with the element.

Slide the breaker bar over the socket wrench handle if the heating element will not budge. Ask a friend to hold the top of the socket wrench over the heating element while you turn the wrench with the bar. Remove the bar from the socket wrench handle once the heating element starts turning.

Mix a solution of half vinegar and half water in a small cup. Dip a toothbrush into the solution and brush it between the seam of the heating element and the side of the heating tank.
