Lift the clip up and out of place, setting it aside on a flat surface to prevent losing it. If your valve clip is not damaged, you should be able to reuse it while securing the new cartridge in place. If it is, however, your new cartridge should come with its own valve clip. Why is my shower cartridge stuck in the valve?
Rubber is especially vulnerable to mineral accumulation, and after the faucet has been in use long enough, the O-rings basically fuse to the cartridge and the valve housing.
