What causes black smoke to come out of boiler?
Black sooty looking smoke indicates incomplete combustion caused normally be too much oil or not enough air. The oil pressure and jet determine the amount of oil and they rarely change. The air is controlled by the air inlet to the boiler and mechanical adjustments to the fan. Its possible the setting was not properly locked and has moved.
Is the Riello burner on an oil fired boiler?

Your pump wont be able to draw oil if there is air in the oil pipe, so I doubt if your pump is faulty.
What should the CO2 be on a Riello 40 boiler?
The co2 should be 10.5% or more on Riello 40 but don’t expect it to be above 11% always. If boiler has a low level flue or a short standard flue, then keep the air setting a tad higher, as you risk boiler going sooty later. You could always have had nozzle problems, & as has been said, check ventilation.
