Non-Standard Ad Unit - How To Discuss

Non-Standard Ad Unit

In the "Preparing your website" section, we recommend that you follow the standard IAB announcements. In fact, these ad sizes have been shown to maximize revenue and are often enough to minimize customization efforts.

However, sometimes an ad network may ask you to place another ad unit on your site. This is usually because they sell a lot of them, so it's a good idea to qualify (assuming they've already proven effective for your site).

In addition to the three standard ad units, there are other legitimate and commonly used custom ad units. Here's a list of some of the most common (see our Ad Size Guide for more information):

  • 300 x 600: This is a very strong ad unit in terms of performance and CPM. It didn't make it to the standard list of ads because there aren't enough sites dedicated to it right now. Also known as the monster MPU, 300 x 600 can run in its own ad space, but is usually configured as a multi-size ad space (ask your ad network) 300 x 250 or 160 x 600.
  • 125×125 – This ad unit is mainly used on recruitment websites, but can also be found on the web. If your ad network does well with ads of this size, it's worth considering.
  • PopUnders - Most people haven't realized it, but popups are essentially being replaced by their slightly less annoying cousin, the popunder. These are web pages that appear outside the current browser window, but are only visible when you close the browser. These ads can provide a fairly effective CPM, but they are extremely annoying to users, so they should be limited to the number of ads a user sees per day. Most networks can run popunders, but we strongly advise against using them. Reputable companies no longer use these types of ads, so your risk to your site's reputation and number of users may not be greater than the money you make. Since pop blockers are very common these days, the amount of inventory available for these devices is very small (and very hard to predict).
  • Interstitials/floating/overlays: These are called differently in different places, but they are sort of a solution to the pop-up problem that the ad industry invented to be more stylish overall. These are ads that appear at the top of the page in the same browser window, as if they were floating. They can be interactive and/or affect the appearance of websites and sometimes display only an image or video. The general rule of thumb is that they take 1530 seconds to close automatically unless the user interacts with them in some way (they should also have a close button). They can make a lot of money, but they also annoy users and therefore don't need to be shown often (again per user per day). We recommend that you don't allow these ads just for the money, but because standard ads can now be created to create these units anyway, so you can also master the process and earn some extra cash.
  • InText/InLine ads: These are small boxes that appear when you hover over certain words on certain pages. There are several companies that do this, and they are especially good at convincing publishers that in-text ads will make them rich. It won't happen, but it is a reasonable source of income and therefore worth considering, although again users find it extremely annoying. It is also difficult to add or remove ads from your site. So if you choose to use text ads, chances are you will be using them for a long time.
