How does a water pump control box work?
The control box mounts to a wall next to the well’s water storage tank. A wire set from the storage tank’s pressure switch and a wire set that leads to the pump motor enters the control box. Inspect the control box’s wiring diagram located on the back of the lid. The wiring diagram identifies the electrical terminals and lists their functions.
Where is the pressure control switch on a well pump?
For most well water or water pressure boosting systems, a pump pressure control switch, usually found close to the water pressure tank, senses the water pressure and when necessary, turns the water pump on.
Do you need a well pump control box?
Fortunately for you, there are measures that you can take to ensure that you have little to no problems with your well’s water system. A nice, sturdy well pump control box will let you enjoy the comfort of having water, and avoid a lot of problems and fees that come with bad ones.
What should the pressure be for a water pump to turn on?
Then turn on water in the building and watch for a pressure drop at the pressure gauge – as pressure falls below the control switch CUT-IN setting, the water pump should turn on. Typically that’s a pressure of 20 or 30 psi.

What do you need to know about water pump control?
The water pressure gauge on home water systems is one of the most helpful and simple devices used in diagnosing poor water pressure and pump, well, or pump control problems. This gauge has broken cover and needs replacement. See WATER TANK PRESSURE GAUGE for water pressure gauge explanation and repair advice.

How do you turn off a water pump?
Turn off the well’s circuit breaker. The correct circuit breaker has a “Well” label. Open the control box’s lid. The control box mounts to a wall next to the well’s water storage tank. A wire set from the storage tank’s pressure switch and a wire set that leads to the pump motor enters the control box.
Why does my well pump pressure control switch stop working?
If the water supply is high in sediment often sediment will clog the pressure sensing opening at the bottom of the pressure control. We’ve tried cleaning out this orifice but it’s never proven to be a lasting repair. If your pump pressure switch stops responding to changes in water pressure it probably needs to be replaced.
What to do if your water pump stops running?
see WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures. If the pump pressure control switch contacts are burned we can sometimes get it working again for a while by first, turning off electrical power as we described above, and then using a file, carefully cleaning all touching-surfaces the switch contacts.
How do you replace a pump control cover?
Remove the screw at the bottom of the pump control cover and lift it off the box to disconnect it. Take it to the store and buy an exact replacement. Snap the new cover onto the old box (no need to rewire if you buy the same brand).
