How are central heating radiators connected?
Radiators work through a heat transfer process called convection. Radiators are normally connected to a central heating system via pipes and hot water flows through these pipes and into the radiators themselves transferring hot water into the radiator. As mentioned, this hot water heats the room via convection.
Do central heating pipes need to be bonded?
All simultaneously accessible metal (class I) equipment (e.g. electrical heaters and showers), central heating pipes, hot and cold water and waste pipes require supplementary bonding in or close to the bathroom. Connections to pipes to be made with BS 951 clamps (complete with “Safety Electrical Connection” label).
What pipes connect to boiler?
You will find seven pipes attached to the boiler:
- A gas supply pipe.
- Mains cold water inlet.
- Hot water outlet.
- Central heating flow pipe.
- Central heating return pipe.
- Pressure relief pipe.
- Condensate pipe.
Do radiator pipes go up or down?
General practice is for the pipework to be installed below the radiator. With suspended timber floors, this is no great problem as the pipes can be installed below the floorboards with the risers to each radiator passing through holes in the floorboards.
Does my boiler need earth bonding?
There is no requirement for bonding a boiler; it is earthed. Supplementary bonding is not required in a kitchen. 1) There are electrical regulations but as it does not apply to boilers there will be no documents. Earthing is used to protect you from an electric shock.
Do copper pipes need to be bonded?
It is not required by the National Electrical Code, but many plumbers will install a bonding wire even when it is not required. The bonding wire is usually a heavy copper wire fastened with brass clamps at one end to the cold water pipe and at the other end to the hot water pipe.
When should I replace my central heating pipework?
Typically, you should start looking at potentially replacing your central heating pipework if your boiler has run into any problems with kettling. Another sign is if your pipework is really hot at the boiler, but that same heat just isn’t getting through to the radiators.
How big are the pipes in a central heating system?
What are gas pipes? Gas pipes deliver gas to a gas-fired central heating boiler from the meter which is used as fuel by the boiler to generate central heating and domestic hot water. Gas pipes can vary in size (15mm, 22mm, 28mm or 35mm) depending on the distance between the boiler and the meter, the boiler manufacturer and the type of boiler.
Can you re-use open vented central heating pipes?
Also be sure that your current system is a 2-pipe type and not one-pipe (when you look under the radiators, does a pipe run between the two valves, connecting them?) Can you re-use the existing pipework?
How to install a central heating system in your home?
Install a wheel valve on the flow connection and a lock shield valve on the return connection. This allows you to regulate the water flow. Lay the pipes from the radiators and faucets to the boiler.
What are the parts of a central heating system?
single pipe – feed and return – micro bore A water central heating system consists of basically the boiler, the radiators and the interconnecting piping. The boiler heats the water and (normally) a pump circulates the water through the pipework and radiators and back to the boiler.
How old are the pipes in a central heating system?
However, before we start all that, we want to get any of the ‘fundamental’, i.e. messy. jobs out of the way. The heating went in when the house was built, so the (microbore) pipework and rads are about 35 years old. The boiler’s a bit newer, but still probably 20 years old, so is going to be replaced.

What to do with an old central heating system?
There is a “water regulations” grade which is as thick as your arm, or an economy grade which is not as good but may be easier to fit if the pipes are tight to a wall. You cut and trim it with a breadknife. Post a pic if you can, I’ve never seen an old one. There may be a plate or label on it with model number or date of manufacture.
