Do pop-up drains need putty?
The putty will help the upper part of the drain assembly seal against the sink drain opening. If you do not have plumber’s putty or cannot use it on your type of sink, then you can use silicone caulk. Some pop-up assemblies come with a foam or rubber gasket to use in place of plumber’s putty or caulk.

How do you adjust the stopper on a pop up drain?
Move the linkage up or down to a different hole to adjust the stopper movement. Reinstall the clip. Check stopper movement; readjust if necessary. The ball rod holds the stopper in the drain. To reach the stopper, the ball rod needs to be removed first. The ball rod is inserted into the side of the drain and attached with a nut.
