Can a toilet be butted up against the back wall?
“I’ve never seen a toilet that isn’t butted up against the back wall.” The tank cover may but up to the wall, but the tanks (unless hung from the wall) rarely are tight. Leaving at least an inch or so allows a small diameter paint roller to get behind the tank without taking it off the bowl.

There is a gap between the back wall and the toilet tank of about 2″. I’ve never seen a toilet that isn’t butted up against the back wall. I don’t like the looks of it, but not sure if it is a big enough deal to complain to my contractor about. This is my first remodel and I have no idea what is “standard” these days.

Due to the smaller tank, the toilet sticks out from the wall. Since I had everything stripped down to the studs, it wouldn’t have been a big deal to move the drain back another couple of inches. It never occurred to me though, and the plumber simply left the drain in the same location.
